TEACHING TEACHERS

Today (Sept. 3) was the first day of school for my middle schooler. Today was also the day that most parents, myself included, were pulling out their hair because the dreaded school supply list arrived.

After reading Matthew Bowers' article (``School supply frenzy,'' Sept. 3), I began to wonder why some schools can send out a supply list ahead of time and some schools cannot. My child's school cannot.

After I came home from work, I read and signed all of the mandatory paperwork. I listened to my child tell me all about the teachers, all about the students, all about the bus, and shared all her enthusiasm about her first day of school. Then we had to go shopping for the supplies on the LIST. We arrived home at 9:15 p.m. and I spent $47.95.

Is it too much to ask that all schools send home a list before the first day of school?

I think that the teachers need to get a little more organized and send a list home well before the first day of school. Their individual preferences for glue sticks as opposed to liquid glue could be sent later.

As far as teachers asking for specific brand names . . . well, another article may be needed for that subject.
