JOSEPH W. DEEN

Joseph W. Deen, 70, of the 1600 block of Sheppard Ave., a retired chief petty officer, died Sept. 11, 1996, in a Norfolk hospital.

Mr. Deen was a native of Fitzgerald, Ga., and a resident of Norfolk for 38 years. He retired after 20 years, from the U.S. Navy, as a chief petty officer. Following his retirement, he worked and retired from the U.S. Civil Service at Navy Sea Combat Systems where he was employed for 20 years.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ellen Quinlan Deen of Norfolk; two daughters, Beth and her husband, Chris Mentch of Ashville, N.C., Susan E. Deen of Nags Head; a son, Gary J. Dean and his wife Polly of Clemmons, N.C.; a sister, Corinne D. York of Lexington, N.C.; a brother, Robert Deen Douglas and his wife Patsy of Jacksonville, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Todd and Christopher Deen, Katie and Kelby Schumacher and Hannah Mentch.

A graveside service with Miliary Honors will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Quantico Veterans Cemetery, Quantico, Va., by Chaplain Wollum Jensen. The family will receive friends at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the Childrens Hospital of The King's Daughters. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk will be handling the arrangements.
