Robert Edward ``Ed'' Harris Jr., 52, of the 200 block of Jay Trail, died Sept. 10, 1996, in his home.

Mr. Harris was born in Nash County, and was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church. He was an officer with Murfreesboro Police Department from September of 1969 until he was appointed chief of police in February of 1979 until the present. He was a member of the American George Masonic Lodge (NU)17, a member of the Sudan Shrine Temple in New Bern, an officer and member of the Barn Hunt Club in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, and a member of the Hertford County Police Officers Club.

Survivors include his wife, Roseleen Hurst Harris of Murfreesboro; a daughter, Christy Hull of Murfreesboro; two sons, Greg Harris of Hickory, N.C., Jeff Harris of Columbus, Ohio; mother and father, Robert Edward Harris Sr. and Evelyn Arrington Harris of Hollister, N.C.; a sister, Laura Smith of Goldsboro, N.C.; two brothers, Tim Harris of Raleigh, N.C., Tommy Harris of Hollister, N.C., and a grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. in Meherrin Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Sellers, the Rev. Phil Qualls and the Rev. Harris Spence. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery with Police Officers Honors. The body will lie in state from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Murfreesboro Municipal Building, Council Chambers. The family will receive friends there from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the Murfreesboro Fire Department or the Murfreesboro Rescue Squad. Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, is in charge.
