PIER ANGLERS REPORT VARIETY OF FISH ON NORTHERN BEACHES

Pier anglers along the northern beaches landed a variety of fish Wednesday.

Lots of croaker and spot were caught on Kitty Hawk Pier on Tuesday night. Action slowed at sunrise, with only scattered spot taken during the day Wednesday.

Avalon Pier reported lots of small gray trout and fair numbers of spot and bluefish landed Wednesday morning. A 47-pound cobia was taken on a bucktail by Wakin Ferris of Kill Devil Hills in the afternoon.

A few spot and small gray trout were caught during the day from Nags Head Pier.

Anglers on Jennette's Pier landed scattered spot, croaker and a few bluefish.

Spot were caught two at a time most of the day on Outer Banks Pier.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported fairly slow fishing with a few spot and croaker taken.

Fishermen on Avon Pier caught croaker and gray trout, small spot, sea mullet, flounder and a few pompano.

Frisco Pier reported a few gray trout, small spot, sea mullet, flounder and a few pompano taken.

Surf fishing was good along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Anglers landed nice spot, croaker, a few sea mullet and some small speckled trout.

Small bottom fish and a few bluefish were taken around Oregon Inlet.

Some gray trout and small bottom fish were caught by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton.

A few puppy drum and bluefish were beached early in the morning at Cape Point. Croaker, flounder and small gray trout were taken along the north beach during the day.

Keeper gray trout and a few puppy drum were landed during the morning along the beach on the sound side of Hatteras Inlet. Small bottom fish were taken by surfcasters from Frisco to False Point.

Inshore trolling outside Oregon Inlet was good with plenty of small Spanish mackerel and bluefish taken. Good catches of two- to seven-pound king mackerel were reported southeast of Oregon Inlet a short distance offshore. Most of the king mackerel were taken on spoons.

Headboats around Oregon Inlet caught big croaker near the Oregon Inlet bridge.

Blue water action off Oregon Inlet was good Wednesday. Four charter craft released more than 40 white marlin. They were fishing well northeast of Oregon Inlet near the 41150 Loran line.

Good catches of dolphin also were reported in the area. Yellowfin tuna fishing was good around the point, although most of the tuna were small.

Charters off Hatteras caught plenty of wahoo. Several boats had at least five fish per boat. A few nice yellowfin tuna were taken, and a sailfish was released by the Sundown.

The water temperature was 76 degrees Wednesday at the Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 79 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by DREW C. WILSON, The Virginian-Pilot
