27-POUND MACKEREL CAPS BIG HAUL OFF PIER

Pier fishing was good along the northern beaches Thursday.

Scattered sea mullet and pompano were taken on Kitty Hawk Pier.

Anglers on Avalon Pier caught some bluefish and small bottom fish during this morning. A 27-pound king mackerel was decked by Marvin Lewis. Afternoon action was slow.

Nags Head Pier reported small bottom fish, tailor bluefish, small gray trout and a few pompano taken.

Lots of spot were landed on Jennette's Pier during the morning. Small bluefish and a few spot were landed during the remainder of the day.

Outer Banks Pier also reported good spot fishing early in the day. A few spot were landed during the remainder of the day, as well.

South of Oregon Inlet, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier caught a few black drum, bluefish, flounder and spot. An 11 3/4-pound Spanish mackerel was landed on a live spot by Paul Taylor of Rodanthe.

Small bottom fish were landed most of the day on Avon Pier.A few spot, sea mullet, gray trout and small bluefish were taken by anglers on Frisco Pier.

Surf fishing for spot and croaker was good along northern beaches on the incoming tide.

Spot and nice-sized croakers were taken in the Oregon Inlet area. Sheepshead were landed from around the supports of the Oregon Inlet bridge. A few nice-sized speckled trout were hauled from Green Island Slough by anglers using live shrimp.

A few bluefish, trout, spot and croaker were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.

A few puppy drum were beached Wednesday night at Cape Point. Small blues were taken during the day.

Tailor bluefish and some big flounder were landed along the beach behind Hatteras Inlet on Thursday morning.

Gray trout and croaker were caught by surf fishermen along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling was good off Oregon Inlet, with Spanish mackerel and small king mackerel landed. Good catches of big croaker were reported from headboats fishing around the Oregon Inlet bridge.

Billfishing was good again Thursday, well northeast of Oregon Inlet. Fair numbers of yellowfin tuna, weighing between 40 and 60 pounds, and some good catches of dolphin were landed in the Gulf Stream southeast of Oregon Inlet.

Dolphin, tuna and wahoo fishing was good off Hatteras. Two sailfish were released by the Capt. B., a blue marlin was released by the Connector and a sailfish was released by Walt Squill's Hatteras Fever.

Spot fishing should be good all along the Dare Coast this weekend, provided sea conditions remain moderate.

The water temperature was 75.5 degrees Thursday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck and 79 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
