HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Western Branch 42

Wilson 7

PORTSMOUTH - On the day the No. 6 Bruins learned star quarterback Daryl Walton must undergo leg surgery and is lost for the season, Western Branch (1-1) had a school single-game touchdown record tied by running back Keith Burnell. Burnell scored five touchdowns, matching a feat twice accomplished by Shyrone Stith. The 6-foot, 180-pound junior rushed for 181 yards on 17 carries, including scoring runs of 27 and 26 yards. Walton watched the game on crutches with an injury he suffered last week and must undergo surgery for torn ligaments. Stepping in as the starter, sophomore David Johnson passed for 82 yards while completing 4 of 7 passes and performing nearly flawlessly in directing a rushing attack that netted 292 yards. Quarterback Kavonzo Beamon hit 7 of 16 passes for 108 yards for Wilson (0-2).

Granby 6

CHESAPEAKE - Fullback/linebacker William Fuller stood out on offense and defense, forcing a fumble that resulted in a touchdown, rushing to set up another and knocking down several passes to help defend the lead. The running of Fuller, who finished with 82 yards on 15 carries, placed the Tigers (1-1) in position to put the game away, which they did on LeVar Griffin's quarterback sneak with 4:26 to go. In the first quarter, Fuller knocked the ball loose, tapping it into end zone. In the ensuing pileup, Latron Cox fell on the ball for the score. Eric Dunnagan kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Granby (1-2) closed to within 7-6 in the fourth quarter, marching 77 yards, capped by an 8-yard run by Alex Sunkins. Sunkins finished with 76 yards on 16 attempts.

Tallwood 12

Cox 10

VIRGINIA BEACH - The defense shined for the No. 5 Lions as Tallwood stopped one Falcon drive at the 2-yard line, forced Cox to settle for a 30-yard Brian Anderson field goal after Charlie Redmon recovered a fumble at the Lions' 11-yard line and held Cox to just 3 yards total offense in the second half and 155 overall. Travis Mazyck provided all the offense Tallwood (2-0, 1-0) would need with an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and a 29-yard touchdown run. Leroy Ellsworth sparked the Falcons (1-1, 0-1) by rushing for 74 yards on seven carries and scoring on a 9-yard run on the game's opening drive.

SUFFOLK - Running back Travis Rawls continued his torrid running pace, rushing for 174 yards and two TDs as the No. 8 Cavaliers (2-0) scored their first win against former Bay Rivers District rival Tabb in eight tries. Rawls, who has averaged over 36 yards on his six touchdown runs for the season, opened the scoring on a 57-yard dash with 1:36 left in the second quarter to tie the score at 7-7, and tacked on a 44-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers added a 2-yard run by fullback Kevin Bell in the third period, set up by an Earl White interception which he returned 36 yards to the Tabb 5. The Tigers (1-1) had one last chance to score, but lost the ball on downs in the fourth quarter. Lakeland's area-leading defense helped the cause, holding Tabb (1-1) to 163 yards, just only 10 through the air. The Tigers scored their only points on a 57-yard punt return in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

Princess Anne's David Johnson led all rushers with 16 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown. CHESAPEAKE - Maury's defense pressured the Wildcats all night, sacking Chris Duda eight times and picking off three Great Bridge passes. The game was marked by sloppy play by both teams; they combined for eight turnovers and 15 penalties. Rodney Brown ran for 114 yards on 16 carries for Maury (2-1), which won its second straight game. The Commodores' Bryant Lawrence scored off one of those interceptions in the first quarter after pressuring Duda to throw from his own end zone. Maury padded the lead when Mike Glover - who had missed the PAT on the Commodores' first touchdown - nailed a 39-yard field goal with 9:46 in the second quarter. Maury scored again in the fourth quarter when quarterback Bobby Jordan led an eight-play, 48-yard drive, capped off by his one-yard plunge into the end zone.
