SEPTEMBER IS TIME TO PLANT SPINACH AND CHINESE CABBAGE

Be sure to keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, if you plant spinach this fall. Spinach is slow to germinate. Some gardeners put the seed in their freezer for two weeks before planting to speed the process. Once up and growing, spinach will live all winter in your garden and often makes the best crop early next spring.

Another good fall vegetable is Chinese cabbage. It can be used like lettuce or in stir-fry cooking. Seed in September, and a head will be formed 60 days after planting. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
