The Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless will meet to make work assignments for the winter shelter season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Churchland Baptist Church.
The organization is asking for churches and synagogues to participate by providing one, or all, of the following:
Men to volunteer as chaperones, staying from 8 p.m. until 7 the next morning.
Members to prepare meals for about 40 beforehand and brought to the shelter location.
People to serve dinner at the shelter.
Volunteers to register shelter guests from 8 to 10 p.m.
If possible, the support churches and synagogues are asked to take responsibility for seven nights. At this week's meeting, those churches and synagogues will draw a date to serve the shelter between Nov. 24 and March 22.
The organization also will review new policies and procedures for shelter participants.
