LAW
Lisa M. Murphy was named an associate at Best & Best, Norfolk. Before joining the firm, she was a law clerk to the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court of Virginia.
EDUCATION
John H. Hackney Jr., the president of Hackney Marketing Inc., and Lyman H. Hammond Jr., the executive director of the MacArthur Foundation, have been appointed to the board of trustees of Norfolk Collegiate School.
Also, Robert P. Morissette was appointed the new head of the middle and upper school at Norfolk Collegiate School. He was previously the principal of Burrillville Middle School in Rhode Island. And, Scott G. Kennedy was selected to the new position of dean of students for the school. He formerly taught at St. Christopher's, an independent day school for boys in Richmond.
ARTS
Virginia Thumm was named foundation director of the Governor's School for the Arts. She was previously an independent development consultant and, prior to that, served as director of development for the Virginia Opera from 1990 through 1994.
MEDIA
Jim Brown was appointed real estate web product manager for the interactive media department of The Virginian-Pilot. He was previously a marketing representative in the real estate classified department of the newspaper and was also coordinator for Home Search magazine.
Michael Hartsfield was named president of Features International Inc., a full-service film and video production and postproduction company in Chesapeake. He joins Features International after working for the Christian Broadcasting Network, where he served as managing producer of ``The 700 Club'' for four years.
Mark Taylor was named editor of Soundings, the independent Navy newspaper for Hampton Roads. Taylor was a general interest reporter for Soundings. Also, Jim Van Slyke was promoted to news editor and Michael Dumke was named staff writer for the weekly publication.
Michael D. Asher was promoted to technology director for the Daily Press. He joined the publishing company in 1978 as a news photographer and was most recently technical operations manager.
Carolyn Miller was appointed director, corporate communications, for International Family Entertainment in Virginia Beach. She previously worked for the National Broadcasting Co. in corporate communications as a public relations consultant in New York.
J. David Renfro was named director of sales for Adams Out-Of-Home Media, a new division of Adams Outdoor Advertising. He will be responsible for the launch of this new electronic media network in the Hampton Roads market. Prior to this, he worked as senior account executive for Benchmark Communications.
ACCOUNTING
Paolo J. Hawley was named a staff accountant with Goodman & Co. in Norfolk. He formerly worked at the City of Hampton as a business tax auditor.
Julie K. Reichle was named a senior accountant and Antoinette L. Lynch and Sharon D. Boyette were named staff accountants at Eason, Lawson & Westphal in Hampton. Reichle was most recently employed with a Louisiana accounting firm; Lynch was previously employed by NASA Langley Research Center; and Boyette was previously employed by the U.S. Department of Energy Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility in the accounting department.
MANUFACTURING
Ronald Holzhauser was named associate director of research and development at Canon Virginia in Newport News. He was most recently vice president of Thomas Built Buses in High Point, N.C.
MARKETING
Linda E. Simon was named a partner in the marketing firm of Julie Starke & Associates in Virginia Beach. In this position, she will consult with area builders, developers, Realtors and other business professionals with marketing concepts and design services. Prior to this, she was the business development director with Kaufman & Canoles.
REAL ESTATE
Robinson Sigma Commercial Real Estate promoted Anthony W. Smith to president and appointed J. Scott Adams to the firm's executive committee. Thomas E. Robinson, former president, will remain active with the firm but will focus on the commercial development activities of Robinson Development Group. Smith joined the firm in 1986 and was most recently senior vice president and director of asset management. Adams serves as director of investment services. Robinson co-founded Robinson & Wetmore Inc. (now known as Robinson Sigma Commercial Real Estate) in 1983 and is president of Robinson Development Group.
ORGANIZATIONS
Jean Yokum, president of Langley Federal Credit Union, was elected chairman to the board of directors of the Better Business Bureau of Greater Hampton Roads. Daniel Sykes of Landmark Communications will serve as chairman-elect.
The Lynnhaven Business Association elected Donna Iovine of Princess Anne Bank president for the 1996-1997 year. Also, Pam Klavenski of Payne, Gates, Farthing & Radd, Chris Carpenter of Independent Lighting Corp. and Mark Wawner of the Virginia Beach Department of Economic Development were elected vice presidents.
