Arlene Newsome ``A.J.'' Jones, 71, of the 300 block of W. 37th St., died Sept. 13, 1996, in Sentara Norfolk General.
A New York City native, she was a teacher for 23 years in the Norfolk schools and the widow of George W. Jones Jr. She was a member of Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Lectors Group, Bereavement Committee, treasurer of the Women's Club and member of Church Women United. She received the Bene Merenti Medal from Pope John Paul II in 1985.
Survivors include a sister, Paulette Jones Morant of Toledo, Ohio; a brother, David T. Newsome of Charlottesville; four nieces; a nephew; first cousin, Octave O. Jones of Richmond.
A funeral will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Walter C. Barrett in Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum. The body will be placed in church 6 p.m. Wednesday. Hale Funeral Home is in charge. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
