White marlin are proving that anglers who store their fishing gear after Labor Day are making a big mistake. The scrappy billfish are providing great late-season action off the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina.
Action has been outstanding for the past several days. Anglers on charter and private boats sailing Sunday from Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach and Oregon Inlet near Nags Head registered as many as 11 white marlin releases.
Yellowfin tuna catches also have been good, especially out of Oregon Inlet, where several catches of 10 to 15 fish have recently been recorded.
Inshore, big spot staged another good showing in Rudee Inlet, while big croaker continued to bite at Lynnhaven Inlet, where several weighing 3 pounds were boated.
Freshwater action remained relatively slow, although some waters produced good hauls of crappie, white perch and shellcracker.
