WEEKEND FISHING SUCCESS DEPENDED ON WHERE YOU WERE

Pier fishing along the Dare Coast varied dramatically from place to place during the weekend.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught only a few spot Saturday. Several speckled trout were landed Sunday morning, and a few spot and mullet were caught in the afternoon.

Some bluefish were taken from Avalon Pier early Saturday morning. Scattered small bottom fish were caught later in the day. A few Spanish mackerel, bluefish and a 1 3/4-pound pompano were decked Sunday morning. Afternoon fishing was slow.

Fishing was slow Saturday morning on Nags Head Pier. Several black drum, weighing as much as 8 pounds, were taken in the afternoon, along with plenty of spot, croaker and a few pompano. Fishing was slow Sunday, with only a few small bottom fish taken.

Jennette's Pier reported good spot and croaker fishing Saturday. Fishing was slow Sunday morning. A few spot and black drum were landed late in the afternoon, and several Spanish mackerel were decked just before dark.

Spot were landed steadily on Outer Banks Pier Saturday. Some nice croaker, a few pompano and several sea mullet also were taken. Only a handful of small bottom fish were caught Sunday.

On Hatteras Island, anglers on Rodanthe Pier caught plenty of spot, a few flounder and scattered mullet Saturday. Fishing was slow Sunday.

Fishermen on Avon Pier landed lots of spot Saturday, along with croaker, mullet and pompano. Fishing was slow Sunday morning, but improved in the afternoon with plenty of spot landed.

Plenty of small bottom fish, small pompano and a 3-pound black drum were caught from Frisco Pier Saturday afternoon. A few nice pompano were landed Sunday morning, but fish were scarce in the afternoon.

Surf fishermen landed fairly good catches of bottom fish from Corolla to Oregon Inlet Saturday. Action was disappointing Sunday.

Some small flounder, nice-sized croaker, spot and a few bluefish were taken around Oregon Inlet during the weekend. Sheepshead fishing was slow. A few trout were landed from Green Island Slough by persistent anglers.

Plenty of spot were taken along the beach from Frisco to Buxton Saturday. A few scattered bottom fish were landed Sunday.

Small bluefish were landed at Cape Point early Saturday morning, and scattered bottom fish were taken later in the day. Some sea mullet, pompano and a few bluefish were caught Sunday.

Surfcasters caught spot, croaker, keeper gray trout, small bluefish and a few flounder Saturday along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet. Fishing was slow in the area Sunday.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was slow during the weekend, as was headboat fishing.

Charters out of Oregon Inlet released 28 white marlin well northeast of the inlet Saturday. Good catches of dolphin also were reported in the same area.

Billfishing improved Sunday, with more than 80 white marlin released near the triple zeroes.Releases included 12 white marlin by the Smoker, six white marlin by the Hooker and five white marlin by the Capt. B.C.

A blue marlin with an estimated weight of 500 pounds was released by the Dream Girl. Some fairly good catches of dolphin and a few tuna also were reported.

Blue water action off Hatteras was slow Saturday, but improved Sunday. Charters landed wahoo, dolphin and tuna.

Several billfish were released, including two sailfish by the Hatteras Fever and one sailfish each by the Release, the Connector, and Nancy K. and Walt Spruill's Hatteras Fever.

Pier fishing for spot along the Dare coast should improve with a wind shift to the northeast.

The water temperature was 75 degrees Monday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and also at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
