Dozens of Dare County firefighters have been filling in at Wrightsville Beach so their colleagues there can deal with the personal problems created by Hurricane Fran.
Kitty Hawk Fire Chief Lowell Spivey said he knew the fire chief at Wrightsville Beach, where the hurricane struck about two weeks ago, and called to see if help was needed.
The southern resort town's firefighters needed time to help their families and repair their property, Spivey was told. He contacted Dare County fire marshal Doug Remaley, and they called area firefighters for volunteers.
Forty-six stepped forward, and they have been working the Wrightsville Beach station in teams since Friday.
Each team works for two days and then is replaced by another. The volunteers will work at least through Friday, Spivey said.
Volunteers came from Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Southern Shores, Colington, Nags Head, Buxton, Roanoke Island and Avon. by CNB
