Several people, including a deputy sheriff, were injured, and at least one person was arrested in a disturbance at a dance at the National Guard Armory over the weekend.
Deputy Francis I. Carter, 58, who was providing uniformed security for the dance, was assaulted twice, police said.
John Russell Jordan Jr., 32, of the 400 block of Railroad Ave., was arrested in connection with the first assault.
Jordan was charged with assault and battery, and disorderly conduct. He was released from Western Tidewater Regional Jail on $1,000 bond.
In the second assault on Carter, he was hit over the head with a bottle but was unable to identify his attacker because someone had turned off the lights, said police spokesman Mike Simpkins.
Police said a fight broke out about 11:45 p.m. Saturday at the Armory in the 2700 block of Godwin Ave. People began throwing chairs and bottles, Simpkins said.
Apparently, some in the crowd panicked when they heard popping noises, believing they were gunshots, he said. A number of people were trampled, and at least two were taken to Obici Hospital, Simpkins said.
