Cmdr. Walter Edwin Johnson, USN (Ret.), 66, of Thatcher Way, died Sept. 14, 1996, in Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
A native of Utah, Cmdr. Johnson lived in Virginia Beach for the past 25 years. After a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy, he was employed by COMPTEK Research for nine years before retiring.
Cmdr. Johnson is survived by Ivy Powell Johnson; a daughter, Elizabeth Johnson Streit; and a son, Robert Glenn Johnson. Other survivors include his brothers, Arnold W. Johnson, Michael Johnson and Alan Johnson; his sisters, Claire Johnson Thacker and Kay Johnson Soloman; and two grandchildren, Connor Powell Ruddy and Samuel Cole Walden Ruddy.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. A chapel service will be conducted by the Rev. Stephen Hay on Friday at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Rosewood Memorial Park.
