Mazda RX-7s recalled for brake problem

Mazda recalled 13,900 RX-7s Tuesday because of a brake problem. Owners of the affected sports cars are being asked to bring them to a Mazda dealer for the replacement of the brake vacuum hoses. The company said that on some RX-7s, from the 1993 through 1995 model years, accumulations of engine oil mist may prevent the brake vacuum check valve from opening at the specified pressure. This could keep the brakes from working right on the first through third attempts after the RX-7s are started in the morning, Mazda said. (AP) Bell Atlantic to market Metrocall services

(Staff) Jackson Hewitt reports higher loss for quarter

Jackson Hewitt Inc. reported a wider net loss for the three months ended July 31 after buying back an option on warrants sold to NationsBank and retiring other warrants on Jackson Hewitt stock. The Virginia Beach-based chain of tax-preparation offices said it lost $2.57 million, or 59 cents, for its fiscal first quarter. That compared with a net loss of $1.33 million, or 33 cents a share, for the year-earlier quarter. Without the one-time costs of buying the option and retiring the warrants, it would have lost $1.32 million, or 32 cents a share, for the recent quarter, Jackson Hewitt said. Its revenue for the May-through-July quarter rose 29 percent to $979,941 from $758,258 million in comparable period last year because of improved franchise sales and increased fees, Jackson Hewitt said.
