ROOSEVELT SMITH

Roosevelt ``Smitty'' Smith, 78, of the 1400 block of Oliver Ave., died Sept. 16, 1996, in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mr. Smith was a native of Dunn, N.C., and was retired after 24 years. He was a member of Providence United Church of Christ, Chesapeake, and a member of the church male chorus and deacon board. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Smith; daughters, Sandra Lindsey, Rose Marie Phillips, Ernestine Smith and Crystal Dowson, all of Chesapeake; sons, Bobby Matthew of Durham, N.C., Tai Wenston Swain of Chesapeake, and Regina Wadworth of Virginia Beach; 21 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lula Smith, and his father, Willie F. Smith.

A funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Providence United Church of Christ, 2200 Vicker Ave., by Dr. Alexander Jamison Sr. Burial will be in Hampton National Cemetery. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Norfolk, is in charge. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Family and friends will assemble at 1416 Oliver Ave. at 11 a.m. Friday for a funeral procession to the church. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
