Mrs. Nessie Smith Koonce, 97, of the Wesleyan Arms Inc. died at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 1996, in the nursing center.
Mrs. Koonce was born June 8, 1899, in High Point, a daughter of Will R. and Willie Ramsey Smith. A lifelong resident of High Point, she was a graduate of High Point High School and attended Lottie Barber Secretarial School. She was a member of the Social Arts Club for over 70 years. She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, a life member of the Women's Christian Society Service and active for many years in the Ladies Auxiliary of the church. On June 7, 1922, she was married to Arnold Jackson Koonce, a former mayor and funeral director.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Doris Koonce Clare of Virginia Beach; a son, Arnold J. Koonce of Nuthatch Court; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Clyde K. Penry, the Rev. Roy L. Grant and the Rev. Carroll M. Upton. Burial will be in the Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will remain in the Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point, and will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family requests that memorials be directed to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1489 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451.
