ROBERT L. KNOWLES SR.

Robert ``Bob'' Leslie Knowles Sr., 84, of the 2500 block of Denning Lane, died peacefully Sept. 18. 1996.

Mr. Knowles was born Sept. 14, 1912, in Portsmouth, but resided in Chesapeake fo 42 years. He was the widower of Margie Smith Knowles, who died Dec. 4, 1992. Mr. Knowles retired Dec. 31, 1973, as general foreman in shop (NU)11 after 32 years of service at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member and former deacon of Jolliff United Methodist Church. He was a founding member of the Portsmouth Angler's Club. His boat, the ``Margie K,'' was well-known to Hampton Roads and Chesapeake Bay fishermen. Mr. Knowles was a charter member of the America-Fellowship Masonic Lodge (NU)148, AF & AM and Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies.

Survivors include his sons, Robert L. Knowles Jr. of Orlando, Fla., and W. Thomas Knowles, and his wife, Sharon, of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Kathy Hoxie, Debbie Paul, Gregory Knowles and Jeffrey Knowles; four great-grandchildren, Jessica Hoxie, Tiffany Paul, Zachary Knowles and Ellen Knowles; four nephews, William Knowles of Chesapeake, Wilfred Hodsden of Silver Springs, Md., William Wirt Hodsden of Cape May, N.J., James Michael Dick of Roanoke, Va.; a niece, June Fletcher of Richmond, Ky. Mr. Knowles is also survived by many other loving relatives and friends and his constant companion, Mrs. Doris Sly of Chesapeake.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the Jolliff United Methodist Church by the Rev. Won Un. Interment will be in the Olive Branch Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will be at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, from 7 to 8 p.m. today. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Jolliff United Methodist Church or the charity of one's choice.
