Robert F. Barnum, 76, of the 100 block of Smythe Court, died Sept. 17, 1996, at home.
A native of New York City, Mr. Barnum retired as the secretary-treasurer of Barnum-Bruns Iron Works Inc., a company founded by his father in 1927. Following his retirement, he had been associated with Chesapeake Bay Steel as an estimator. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Mission and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving at Iwo Jima.
He was a former member of the American Legion, Princess Anne Country Club, the Norfolk Yacht Club and Country Club and the Midtown Kiwanis Club. He coached Community League Baseball in Norfolk and had been a scout leader of Troop (NU)39 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church and had been awarded the Order of the Arrow by the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Barnum was a former board member of the Builders and Contractors Exchange in Norfolk and had served as the chairman of the Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Ironworkers Local (NU)79.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth D. Barnum; two daughters, R. Theresa Bancroft of Cape Coral, Fla., and Roberta Boeh of Columbia, Md.; two sons, David F. Barnum of Hampton and Patrick H. Barnum of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by one granddaughter and three grandsons.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach, by Father Joseph Marx. A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home after which the family will remain to receive friends. Memorial donations may be made to the Diabetes Institute of Eastern Virginia Medical School or to the Sentara Hospice Program.
