SHELBY J. VEST

Ms. Shelby Jean Vest, 57, of 4201 Hydro St., died Wednesday Sept. 18, 1996.

Born Jan. 19, 1939 at Reusens, Va., she was the daughter of the late Andrew J. (Jack) Vest and Isabelle Martin Vest. Shelby was a city bus driver for 25 years, 19 years with the Tidewater Regional Transit in Norfolk and six years with the Greater Lynchburg Transit Co.

She is survived by her ex-husband, Calvin H. Rice and their three children, A. Edward Rice and his wife, Martha B. Rice, Mollie Beth Rice, all of Lynchburg and Marietta M. Wicker and her husband, Jeffrey D. Wicker of Norfolk; a foster-son, Donald L. Dunkley of Danville; four grandchildren, Sylvia A. Kaplan and Carina B. Wicker of Norfolk and Aaron E. Rice and Tiffany K. Rice of Lynchburg; two brothers, Andrew J. Vest Jr. and his wife, Shirley S. Vest of Concord and James F. Vest Sr. and his wife, Joyce B. Vest of Lynchburg; three sisters, Gracie V. Henson, Virginia V. Booth and her husband, M. Dennis Booth, all of Madison Heights and Della V. Rice and her husband, Herbert D. Rice Sr. of Coleman Falls; a brother-in-law, Elwood W. Rice and his wife, Theresa Rice of Hampton; two sisters-in-law, Barbara R. Joseph , the widow of Alberta Joseph of Quinton, Va., Bernice L. Bukowski and her husband, Charles Bukowski of Virginia Beach; special friends, Ms. Betty H. Roark and family, Mrs. Billie Riebold and her husband, Louis and family, Mrs. Joan Layne and her husband, Elbert and family all of Norfolk, and Mitchell, Betty Martin and family of Virginia Beach and many other relatives and friends.

Especially dear to Shelby's heart are her many passengers who rode with her on the bus over the years.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Whitten Park Ave. Chapel, Lynchburg, by the Rev. Ernest Scott. Interment will be in Meade Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times at her residence, 4201 Hydro St.
