MACARTHUR CENTER'S DESIGN ALTERED CHANGES HELP NORFOLK MALL BLEND IN BETTER WITH DOWNTOWN SURROUNDINGS, DEVELOPERS SAY

FROM THIS...

Many objected to the original design of MacArthur Center, shown here in a computer rendering down City Hall Avenue, with the MacArthur Memorial on the far right. Critics said it looked bland from the outside, didn't appeal to pedestrians and didn't blend well with historic buidings downtown.

...TO THIS

The same view in an artist's sketch shown Wednesday: Designers have put windows where there used to be blank brick walls, such as at the entrance to Dillards, shown on the far left. Architecture on City Hall Avenue and Freemason Street meshes with historic buildings such as the MacArthur Memorial.

The most detailed drawings yet of what the mall will look like were unveiled Wednesday. It has the same layout, but restaurants and shop fronts can now be seen from street level, as in along Monticello Avenue, above. Critics, however, said the changes didn't go far enough.< Story, A13
