NORTHERN BEACHES WERE THE SPOT FOR SPOT

Fishing for spot was good on most ocean piers along the northern beaches Thursday.

A few spot were landed on Kitty Hawk Pier during the morning, and plenty of spot and croaker were caught in the afternoon.

Avalon Pier reported a few bluefish, spot, croaker and sea mullet taken off and on during the day. Lots of albacore were seen around the pier, but few were hooked.

Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught scattered spot, croaker and some nice sea mullet. A few Spanish mackerel and tailor blues were landed from the end of the pier.

Plenty of nice spot, many weighing more than a half-pound, were taken during the morning from Jennette's Pier. Scattered spot were landed in the afternoon.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught lots of nice spot during most of the day. A few mullet, toadfish, black drum and small flounder also were taken.

South of Oregon Inlet, plenty of spot were landed from Rodanthe Pier late Wednesday afternoon. Scattered spot and mullet were taken Thursday.

Scattered spot were caught sporadically throughout the day from Avon Pier.

Frisco Pier reported a few puppy drum and some nice-size croaker landed during the morning. Lots of pompano were taken in the afternoon.

Surf fishermen along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet caught a few spot, mullet and an occasional puppy drum. A few spot and small flounder were beached around Oregon Inlet.

Fair numbers of spot and croaker were landed in the surf along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. A few puppy drum were taken early Thursday morning at Cape Point. Some nice spot and a few two-pound bluefish were caught by surfcasters near Ramp 43.

Some nice gray trout were beached in the Hatteras Inlet area late Wednesday. Small bluefish, flounder and a few puppy drum were landed from Ramp 55 to Hatteras Inlet Thursday.

Inshore trolling was slow around Oregon Inlet on Thursday. A few king mackerel, Spanish mackerel and albacore were taken by intermediate charters several miles offshore.

Tuna fishing improved, with some fairly good catches of 20- to 50-pound yellowfins landed southeast of Oregon Inlet near the point. Several white marlin were hooked and released in the same area.

Charters operating off Hatteras caught some nice wahoo, scattered tuna and dolphin.

Spot fishing should be good along the Dare Coast during the weekend.

The water temperature was 73 degrees Thursday at the Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 75 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
