James Virgil Sherwood Sr., 65, of the 300 block of Willard Drive, died Friday Sept. 20, 1996, at his residence.
Mr. Sherwood was born in Grafton, Va., and was the son of the late Chauncey C. and Mary Swartz Sherwood. He had been employed with Midland Petroleum, was former owner of the Speedway Restaurant in Chesapeake, and worked part-time with Thrifty Rent-a-Car. Mr. Sherwood was a member of the South Norfolk Moose Lodge (NU)1940 and a lifelong member of Bide-A-Wee Golf Course.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Sherwood; his two daughters, Theresa Harris of Portsmouth and Lori Wingfield of Roanoke, Va.; his two sons, James V. Sherwood Jr. of Roanoke, Richard Sherwood of Portsmouth; his two stepdaughters, Judith Bunch of Edenton, N.C., Lou Ann Genaux of Portsmouth; his sister, Mary Garrow of Denbigh; his two brothers, Fred Sherwood of Raleigh, N.C., Harry Sherwood of Hampton; ten grandchildren and a great-grandson.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens by the Rev. William Beagle. Viewing will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, where the family receive friends.
