A man suspected of shooting another to death and then holding a woman captive in a Pinewood Village townhouse for several hours Friday surrendered to police early Saturday.
After the man surrendered, officials found the woman dead inside the home.
Details remained sketchy as police took the man into custody, hours after surrounding the home and negotiating with the man by telephone.
Just before 8 p.m., police said, a man barged into the home in the 1100 block of Riviera Drive, just off Indian River Road near Interstate 64.
Moments later, police said, heshot a man in the house.
The woman in the house called police from another room to report the shooting. Moments later, she told police dispatchers the gunman had come into the room where she was. At that moment, the telephone line went dead.
A police SWAT team took up positions around the townhouse while police evacuated residents of neighboring homes and sealed off a two-block area around the scene.
Police negotiators arrived and were able to get the gunman on the phone.
``There has been some intermittent contact,'' police spokesman Lou Thurston said late Friday.
While police would not disclose the nature of the conversations, the negotiators were able to get the gunman's permission to send rescue personnel into the home to tend to the man who had been shot.
When they got him outside, however, they found he was already dead. The body remained outside the home late Friday. Police did not release the identities of anyone involved or a possible motive for the incident. ILLUSTRATION: Color Map: Area shown: Riviera Drive, site of police
