Listening to the so-called Christian Coalition last week, I was indeed tempted to turn in my baptismal certificate. I was dismayed as the leadership of the Republican Party participated in pandering to the far-right bigoted to form an unholy alliance.
The one breath of fresh air was the address of Ross Perot, one of the few real family-value men among them, with one wife, well-reared children and lots of grandchildren. Naturally he was booed (not at all Christian or even polite) because he had the courage not to pander to their obsession for making abortion the cornerstone of American political thought.
His EAP policy statement on abortion is well worth reading by all of us and particularly women who rightfully should have to speak only to their God on this personal decision.
