Ruth Watson Ely, 96, a lifelong resident of Hampton, died Sept. 21, 1996.
Mrs. Ely was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and its Ruth Perkins Sunday School Class. She volunteered her time during World War II as a hostess for the USO and chaperoned girls at dances in the YMCA at Fort Monroe.
Survivors include her daughter, Gaynell E. Writtenberry of Hampton; one granddaughter, Ruth W. Kourtiche; three great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Clark Cemetery by the Rev. Rodney L. Caulkins. The family requests expressions of sympathy to be made in the form of contributions to St. John's Episcopal Church Discretionary Fund, 100 W. Queens Way, Hampton, Va. 23669.
