NORFOLK MAN KILLED; NEW YORKER HELD

A 31-year-old Queens, N.Y., man was charged with murder Sunday after he allegedly shot and killed a Norfolk man late Saturday in a convenience store parking lot.

The victim, Lendell Godfrey, 22, of the 9600 block of 20th Bay St., was shot just before 11 p.m. at a 7-Eleven store at the intersection of Pleasant Avenue and Shore Drive. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said the suspect, Brian Richardson, allegedly shot Godfrey multiple times after an altercation between Godfrey's sister, two of her acquaintances and two women acquainted with Richardson.

Police did not disclose whether Godfrey was armed.

Police said that after Godfrey was shot, Richardson and the two women fled in a car. Based on information from witnesses, Officer J.C. Long spotted the suspect near Heutte Drive and Camellia Road.

Richardson was arrested and charged with murder and using a gun while committing a felony. He will be arraigned in General District Court today. The gun believed to have been used in the killing was recovered. ILLUSTRATION: JOHN C. BELL photo
