Two times in just over a week, construction vans were broken into and burglarized.

On Aug. 27 about 10:15 p.m., a man driving a late-model, dark-colored Chevrolet Lumina van pulled into the parking lot in the 1300 block of London Bridge Road near Shipps Corner Road and broke into two Dowdy Electric Inc. vans.

The second incident occurred shortly before midnight on Sept. 5. Again, windows were broken and items were stolen from two Dowdy vans at the same location.

The stolen property included Black & Decker electric drills, Makita and Black & Decker battery-powered drills, four yellow wire reels, copper wire, extension cords and numerous electrician's hand tools.

The burglar is described as white and appears to be in his 30s. He is about 5 feet 10 inches tall and has brown hair to his collar.

On Sunday, Sept. 8, about 2 a.m., police and rescue workers were called to the 700 block of St. Bernard Square in the Emerald Point Complex. They found Edward Purnell, 44, shot in front of his apartment. He died a short time later at a hospital.

Detectives believe he was robbed and shot as he got out of his truck.

Purnell had just returned from the Texaco Food Mart at Laskin Road and Regency Drive. PORTSMOUTH

On Sept. 8, James Elmo Gilliam Jr., 41, was found shot to death in his driveway in the 1200 block of Marshall Ave.

Hackney is described as white, 6 feet 3 inches tall and 250 pounds, with a muscular build, and brown hair and hazel eyes. HAMPTON
