John Haller Nichols, 91, died Sept. 20, 1996, in Mary Washington Hospital.
A native of Portsmouth, he was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and later attended Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1928 with a degree in chemical engineering.
After graduation, he worked for Tubize Chatillion Corporation in Hopewell until that company moved to South America. For more than 30 years, he worked for Sylvania Corporation in Fredericksburg, retiring several years ago as a senior chemist. Mr. Nichols was an avid golfer and was a knowledgeable expert and collector of Indian arrowheads.
He is survived by his son, John Haller Nichols Jr. of Fredericksburg; a nephew, William B. Spong Jr. of Portsmouth; and a cousin, Georgiana C. Woodhouse of Portsmouth.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
