CHOICES ARE AS PLENTIFUL AS THE CATCH

There are plenty of places to pier fish locally and on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Following is a listing of fishing piers:

NORFOLK

Harrison's Boathouse and Pier: 414 West Ocean View Ave.; 1,600 feet long; open 24 hours a day. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rentals, and a snack bar. Admission: $4 for adults, $2.50 for seniors and children under 12. Monday is men's day ($2.50); Tuesday is ladies' day ($2.50); monthly and yearly passes also available. Phone: 587-9630.

VIRGINIA BEACH

Lynnhaven Pier: 2350 Starfish Road, off Shore Drive; 1,500 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rentals, and a snack bar. Admission: $5. Phone: 481-7071.

Virginia Beach Fishing Pier: 15th Street at the Oceanfront; 1,000 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rentals, and a snack bar and restaurant. Admission: $5 for adults, $2.50 for children 11 and under, $1.25 for non-fishermen. Phone: 428-2333.

Little Island Park Pier: 3750 South Sandpiper Road, south of Sandbridge; 440 feet long; open from 5:30 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. Has no bait shop or tackle-rental facilities, but there are snack machines in the park. Admission: $2, plus $1 parking for residents and $3 for non-residents. Phone: 426-7200.

PENINSULA

Buckroe Beach Fishing Pier: 330 S. Resort St. in Hampton; 1,300 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rentals for $5. Admission: $4.50 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12. Phone: 851-9146.

Grandview Fishing Pier: 155 State Park Road in Hampton; 900 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod and reel rentals, and a snack bar. Admission: $4.50 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, $2.50 for children 6-12. Phone: 851-2811.

James River Pier: Part of the old James River Bridge, located at the north end of the new James River Bridge in Newport News; 3/4-mile long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rentals. Admission: $4.50 for adults, $2.50 for senior citizens and children under 12. Phone: 247-0364.

OUTER BANKS

Kitty Hawk Fishing Pier: Mile Post 2; 714 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rental, and a restaurant on the pier. Admission: $5 for adults, $3 for children up to 13. Phone: 919-261-2772.

Avalon Fishing Pier: Mile Post 6 in Kill Devil Hills; 700 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rental, and a snack bar. Admission: $5 for adults, $2.75 for children 12 and under. Phone: 919-441-7494.

Nags Head Fishing Pier: Mile Post 12; 750 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rental, and a snack bar and restaurant. Admission: $5 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12. Phone: 919-441-5141.

Jeanette's Fishing Pier: Mile Post 16 1/2 in Nags Head; 539 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rental. Admission: $5. Phone: 919-441-6116.

Outer Banks Fishing Pier: Mile Post 18 1/2 in South Nags Head; 650 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rental, and a restaurant. Admission: $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, $2.50 for children 6-12, free for those under 6. Phone: 919-441-5740.

Hatteras Island Fishing Pier: in Rodanthe; 700 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rental, and a snack bar. Admission: $5 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under, $1 for spectators. Phone: 919-987-2323.

Avon Fishing Pier: in Avon; 750 feet long; open 24 hours. Has a bait and tackle shop with rod-and-reel rental, and a snack bar and restaurant. Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for children, $1 for spectators. Phone: 919-995-5480.

Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier: in Frisco, and commonly referred to as the Frisco Pier; 450 feet long; open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
