WEEKLY BRIEFING

MILITARY RETIREE SEMINAR: Rear Adm. Robert T. Ziemer, commander of Norfolk Naval Base, will sponsor a Military Retiree Seminar from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Oct. 5 in Rockwell Hall at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base. Highlights include a health fair, free health screening, workshops and information booths from a variety of organizations. Workshops will include ``Space A'' travel and lodging, MEDICARE, finances and survivor benefits. The seminar is open to all military retirees, their family members and surviving military spouses. FLEET RESERVE PRESIDENT NAMED: Robert E. Fudge, a former Portsmouth resident, has been elected national president of the Fleet Reserve Association, the 160,000-member organization of active-duty, reserve and retired enlisted personnel of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Fudge retired as a chief journalist in 1969.

MILITARY FAMILY RECOGNITION: Armed Forces YMCA is sponsoring a luncheon to recognize a military family from each of the five military service branches for their overall contribution toward making the community a better place to live and work. The luncheon, which is open to the public, will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Fort Story Officers Club in Virginia Beach. Cost is $12. For reservations call 363-1884.

NASA EXHIBITS AT STATE FAIR: NASA Langley Research Center will participate in the Virginia State Fair in Richmond beginning Thursday through Oct. 6 with a series of exhibits, including its crash facility, the Olympics transportation experiment, advanced composite materials, wind tunnels, futuristic airplane models, the space shuttle, satellites and high-speed research. The exhibit will be located in the Commonwealth Technology Building where the theme is ``Welcome to the 21st Century.''

MULBERRY ISLAND RUN: The 17th annual Mulberry Island Run will begin at 8:45 a.m. Oct. 5 at Fort Eustis. Three races will be held - a 5-kilometer, half-marathon and one-mile children's run. ARRIVING

The Coast Guard cutter Bear returned home to Portsmouth Sunday after spending six weeks at sea. After a week of training, the cutter participated in counter-narcotics patrols in the Caribbean.

CHANGE OF COMMAND

Vice Adm. John Scott Redd, formerly assigned to Norfolk as commander of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic, has assumed duties as director of strategic plans and policy of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon.

Vice Adm. William J. Fallon, formerly deputy and chief of staff for the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, has assumed command as deputy and chief of staff for U.S. Atlantic Command in Norfolk, replacing Adm. Harold W. Gehman Jr., now vice chief of naval operations.

Capt. Clifford B. Bussard relieves Capt. James M. Kirby as commanding officer of Naval Reserve Naval Doctrine Command 106 at the Norfolk Naval Station. Bussard previously served as executive officer of the same command. Kirby received the Legion of Merit award for his performance. by CNB
