Bravo to Patrick Lackey for his column on dog and cat overpopulation. (``South Hampton Roads has far too many dogs and cats,'' Sept. 12).
I have noticed that the number of stray cats, especially, seems to be on the rise. I have one such fellow recuperating from neuter surgery at my house. This sweet cat is so tame and loving he obviously once had a home. But his sunny nature did not save him from abandonment - he showed up in my neighborhood skeletal, bedraggled and flea-infested.
It's not enough that people simply ``find good homes'' for animals they breed. If the animals are not spayed or neutered before they are sold, they could add to the overpopulation problem. And every animal bred takes a home away from an animals on the street or in the shelter.
