ARTHUR R. BLOOM

Arthur Russell Bloom, 86, of 601 Pembroke Ave., died Sept. 23, 1996, in a local hospital.

Mr. Bloom was born in Scranton, Pa., and had been a resident of Portsmouth for the past 45 years. He retired from the Equitable Life Assurance Co. of America as a senior consultant. He had been a very active leader in both the civic and religious communities.

Mr. Bloom was past president of B'nai Brith Sol Fass Lodge 1326 and of Portsmouth Jewish Community Council; chairman of U.J.A. Men's Division; past president of Gomley Chesed Synagogue and was Man of the Year 1989-1990; chairman of the Synagogue's Burial Society; chairman of the Ritual Committee and trustee of the Congregation; member of the Jewish War Veterans; volunteer worker for Meals on Wheels; past president of Lion's Club, where he received the Lion's Club International Foundation Melvin Jones Fellow for Humanitarian Services. Also with the Host Lion's Club of Portsmouth he was in charge of Eye Donor Cards for the Eye Bank and he was chairman of the annual Fishing Trip for the Blind for 10 years. He was also a member of the Elk's Club (NU)82.

Survivors include his wife, Etta Swersky Bloom; his daughter, Priscilla Kostiner of Portland, Ore.; his daughter, Janice ``Cookie'' Bell of Northern Virginia; his son, Ronald J. Berg of Virginia Beach; three granddaughters and a great-grandson.

Services will be conducted at Gomley Chesed Synagogue today at 3 p.m. by Rabbi Philip Krohn with burial in Gomley Chesed Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Gomley Chesed Synagogue. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
