Idella Debnam Treakle, 96, of The Newport News Baptist Community and formerly of Norfolk, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 20, 1996.
She was the widow of Capt. Henry T. Treakle, daughter of the late Fanny O. Brinn and R.W. Debnam, the surviving sister of Reginald W. Debnam, Robert O. Debnam, Melrose D. Chappel, Erma D. Hoffecker and she was the mother of the late Lee Baker Franklin.
She was an active member of Larchmont Baptist Church where she served as president of The Women's Missionary Society, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, a member of the Friendship Bible Class and worked in the office. She was also very active as a member of First Baptist until it burned and was relocated. She was active during World War II recycling and as an air raid warden. She served on the Selective Service Board, as a clerk for the Baptist Association for 10 years and on the original board that planned the Newport News Baptist Home. She was a firm believer in research to advance medical science and has donated her body to EVMS for the cause.
She is survived by her children, Frances B. Clark of Norfolk and Joseph O. Baker of Florida; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Larchmont Baptist Church on Sept. 29, 1996 at 4 p.m. by the Revs. John Dean and Wendell Sodergren.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Larchmont Baptist Church or Riverside Regional Medical Center who gave her loving care.
