The City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday to pay $2.1 million to widen two miles of Oceana Boulevard to relieve congestion alongside Oceana Naval Air Station.
The two new lanes, which would be built immediately west of the existing road, would be designed to last seven years. The Southeastern Parkway and Greenbelt, to run just east of Oceana Boulevard, is expected to be completed by then.
The Virginia Department of Transportation is also scheduled to improve the northern and southern ends of Oceana Boulevard connecting to Virginia Beach and General Booth boulevards. All work on Oceana Boulevard should be completed by the spring of 1999.
In other business, the City Council created a committee to study opportunities and the demand for different types of retirement living in Virginia Beach. Council member Barbara M. Henley said she would like more information on how Beach residents want to spend their later years.
``I'd like to make sure we have housing options for a broad spectrum of the elderly,'' she said, suggesting that zoning changes might be needed to allow more options such as ``granny flats,'' or apartments over garages and in small buildings. by CNB
