INSHORE WATERS LURE ANGLERS FROM PIERS

Pier fishing slowed Tuesday along the northern beaches as inshore water cleared.

Scattered spot were landed sporadically throughout the day on Kitty Hawk Pier.

Fishermen on Avalon Pier caught fair numbers of bluefish and Spanish mackerel on jiggers. Several cobia and king mackerel were seen, but most showed little interest in anglers' offerings.

A few spot and sea mullet were landed from Nags Head Pier. A 10-pound albacore and a 2 1/2-pound bluefish were taken on artificial baits.

Jennette's Pier reported a few spot, sea mullet and croaker taken off and on during the day.

Anglers on Outer Banks Pier caught spot, several bluefish and Spanish mackerel, a few pompano and a few black drum. One cobia was lost.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported little action.

A few Spanish mackerel and pompano were caught by fishermen on Avon Pier. A lot of live bait was in the the area and plenty of albacore were seen, but few were hooked.

Some nice Spanish mackerel, scattered toadfish and a few sea mullet were landed on Frisco Pier.

Surf fishermen took small bottom fish from deeper sloughs along the northern beaches Tuesday. The best action was on the high tide.

Small bottom fish, tailor bluefish and a few gray trout were landed around Oregon Inlet.

Good quantities of spot, croaker, bluefish and some sea mullet were hauled from the surf between Rodanthe and Buxton. Some puppy drum were taken from sloughs north of Rodanthe Pier.

Lots of blues were landed at Cape Point early Tuesday morning. Some puppy drum were landed along the beach north of Cape Point behind the Buxton motels.

A few small flounder were beached by surf fishermen from Frisco to False Point.

Small king mackerel and false albacore were taken by charters trolling spoons a few miles southeast of Oregon Inlet. Some king mackerel also were caught around Wimble Shoals.

Yellowfin tuna fishing was good between the 41460 Loran line and the point. Most of the fish taken were in the 50-pound class. Billfishing was slow overall.

Charters off Hatteras landed good catches of bailer dolphin, a few wahoo and scattered yellowfin tuna. Billfish were scarce.

The water temperature was 71.5 degrees Tuesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck. by CNB
