COX GOLF WIN 100TH FOR COACH HOLLAND

A team on a mission to secure the 100th career victory for its coach, Cox posted a decisive 295-331 victory over Salem in a golf match between two Beach District unbeatens Tuesday at Red Wing.

The Falcons, sparked by a par 72 by Ryan Garland, upped their district record to 6-0 and overall mark to 12-0. It was the 18th consecutive conference victory for Cox, dating back to 1994.

``On the bus over, we told Coach (Stuart) Holland we were going to give him his 100th win and we were going to shoot a 292. We came up just a little short,'' said Garland.

``I had told them I felt we might need 301 to win,'' said Holland, who has only five losses on his record. ``They really came close to the 292. But this was our best score of the season and I'm very pleased.''

Actually Garland was a little disappointed with his 72. The junior transfer from Bayside scorched the front nine with a 3-under 33 and didn't have a bogey on his scorecard until he three-putted the 14th.

But Garland finished up with bogeys on the last three holes.

``The score was okay,'' he said. ``If I had those last three bogeys earlier in the round I would be a little more enthused.''

Matt Paulson, Cox's 1994 state champion, and David Krop, a steadily improving senior, both contributed 2-over-par 74s. Junior Darren Alexander chipped in a 75.

It was Krop's best round yet.

The Falcons played so well that a 78 by Ryan Roebuck didn't have to be counted.

Josh Viohl paced Salem (5-1) with 77. Kevin Miller, the Beach District tournament winner last year, added 79.

Jeff Draude's 87 and Kevin Barry's 88 were the other Salem scores.

``Now that I've reached 100 golf victories, I have one more coaching goal,'' said Holland, who is in his sixth year at the helm of the Falcons' golf team after a two-year stint earlier. ``I would like to have 500 overall wins before I quit coaching.''

He won 406 games while coaching basketball and tennis at Cox. This boosts his overall victories to 456.

The golf team must note that the next 44 wins must come in golf. That's the only sport Holland coaches now.
