TAXPAYERS FOOT MILITARY-TUITION BILL

In his letter (``Don't drop fees,'' Sept. 21), Rick Hutson states that military stationed in this area should not be given a break on college class fees and the like.

Perhaps it is time for a renewal of that little experiment, many years ago, in which all military pay was given in silver dollars. Local retailers, tax collectors and college administrative offices found themselves awash in the troublesome things, making clear how much of the regional economy is dependent upon the military.

One must remember, however, that in many cases, the U.S. government actually pays all or most of the military's tuition fees. This benefit is considered a recruiting plus. The money, eventually, comes out of the taxpayer's pocket.

In keeping with the aforementioned, perhaps the taxpayers should give them and/or ourselves a break and negotiate a ``discounted'' tuition.
