WILLIAM E. HAWKINS SR.

William Earl ``Hawk'' Hawkins Sr., 66, died Sept. 23, 1996, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Mr. Hawkins retired five years ago as a physical education teacher for Brentwood Public School System, Brentwood, Long Island, N.Y., after 24 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Norfolk. He received an honorable discharge from U.S. Army after serving as a lieutenant airborne paratrooper.

Mr. Hawkins was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity (Chi Rho Chapter, Suffolk County, N.Y.) and Lamda Omega Chapter, Norfolk. He was a graduate of North Carolina A & T University and attended North Carolina Central University. He received his M.A. from Columbia University and an athletic achievement award from Brentwood School District, Brentwood, Long Island.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Francena Hunter Hawkins; a son, William Earl Hawkins Jr. of Westbury, Long Island; grandchildren, William Earl Hawkins III, Jasmine Maria Hawkins; daughter-in-law, Maria Bisono Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Fields Berkeley and father, Asker Boyd Hawkins.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church, 418 Bute St., Norfolk, by the Rev. Robert G. Murray. Family will receive relatives and friends for visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today in P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
