ARMISTEAD JONES

Armistead Jones died Sept. 24, 1996.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1922, in Richmond, to Roy and Caroline Jones. Mr. Jones attended Richmond public schools and Virginia Episcopal School and graduated from Virginia Tech. He served as an Army Air Corps radar technician in the Pacific during World War II. He had a long career in the meat-packing industry and retired from Smithfield Packing Co. in 1986. He moved to Smithfield in 1961 and served the town as councilman, vice mayor and mayor.

Mr. Jones was a member of the Rotary, Smithfield Union Masonic Lodge, (NU)18, American Legion, George F. Dashiell, Post (NU)49, Smithfield's Gridiron Club and the Country Club of Virginia. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Smithfield, where he served as a member of Vestry, junior warden and senior warden.

In 1992, Mr. Jones was appointed elector of president and vice president of the United States. He and his wife were co-recipients of the Mills E. Godwin Award from the 4th District Republican Committee.

He is survived by his wife, Eliza Lindsey Jones; a daughter, Catharine Owen of Smithfield; a son, Talbott Jones of Smithfield; a daughter, Jean Roy Franzinetti of Santa Margherita, Italy; a niece, Dr. Caroline Riely of Memphis, Tenn.; a nephew, Henry Riely of Richmond; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Christ Episcopal Church, Smithfield. The family recommends donations to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, Va. 23431, in lieu of flowers. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.
