LAURA H. ELMORE

Laura H. Elmore, 89, of the 200 block of Terrace Court, Suffolk's 1976 First Citizen, died Sept. 25, 1996.

A native of Kenbridge, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Eldridge and Martha Edith Kennedy Hurt and the widow of T. Llewellyn ``Lew'' Elmore, who died in 1990. She served as executive director of the Virginia Lung Association, headquartered in Suffolk, from 1943-1974, as board chairman of the Suffolk Voluntary Action and Information Center, as chairman of Suffolk Services and Emergencies Inc. and the Alzheimer's Support Group for the Tidewater area. Mrs. Elmore originated three organizations in Suffolk: the Committee for Employment of the Physically Handicapped, the Task Force on Aging and the Interagency Health Council. She was a board member of the Suffolk Substance Abuse Youth Council, Meals on Wheels and Long Term Care for the past 18 years and she served on the board of the Tidewater Occupation Center.

Mrs. Elmore was the first woman to serve on the Suffolk City Council, serving from 1955 to 1963 and was one of the 20 Virginia delegates to participate in the White House Conference on Aging in 1981. She received the Longwood College Distinguished Alumni Community Service Award. She was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a former chairman of the board of stewards.

Survivors include her daughter, Martha E. James of Wilmington, N.C.; a sister, Jennie H. Butler of Suffolk; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Holly Lawn Cemetery by Dr. Alan Felumlee. The family will be at her home. Memorial donations may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk, Va. 23434 or the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk, Va. 23439. R. W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
