LOPSIDED FUND-RAISING MARKS RACE INCUMBENT CLAYTON HAS RAISED 25 TIMES AS MUCH AS RIVAL FOR THE 1ST DISTRICT.

In North Carolina's 1st Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Eva Clayton of Warren County has raised 25 times as much money as her opponent, Rich Square Republican Herbert M. ``Ted'' Tyler.

Based on the latest report issued by the Federal Election Commission, Clayton has collected $82,374, compared to $3,300 for Tyler.

Nearly three-quarters of Clayton's campaign cash has come from political action committees. Clayton, who is seeking her third term, has $59,324 in PAC support, compared with $500 for Tyler.

The Washington, D.C.-based Association of Trial Lawyers was Clayton's biggest contributor, pumping $6,000 into her campaign. Pharmaceutical giant Glaxo-Wellcome and the Washington-based Democratic-Republican Independent Voter Education Committee each kicked in $5,000.

Tobacco giants Brown & Williamson, Philip Morris and RJR Nabisco contributed a total of $3,500.

Agricultural and labor interests also contributed to the Clayton bid. The Georgia Peanut Producers PAC and the Farm Credit Council PAC gave $2,000 each.

The Raleigh-based North Carolina Pork Producers PAC, the North Dakota-based MINN-DAK Farmers' Cooperative PAC and the Washington, D.C.-based National Broiler Council contributed $500 each. Clayton also received money from the Florida Sugar Cane League, the Rural Builders PAC and the Springfield, Mo.-based Mid-America Dairymen PAC.

The United Auto Workers V-PAC led organized labor contributions with a $1,500 contribution, while the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, and the National Education Association, a teachers' union, gave $1,000 each to Clayton's campaign.

The Machinists' Non-Partisan Political League, The Laborers' Political League and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen PAC each gave $500 to the Clayton campaign.

Clayton voted in favor of legislation to raise the minimum wage, a key issue for organized labor. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
