CHARLES E. STEWART

Charles Edward Stewart, 73, of S. Wolfsnare Drive, died Sept. 25, 1996 in Virginia Beach General Hospital with his family at his side.

Originally a native of Youngstown, Ohio, he was a resident of the Tidewater area for 40 years. Mr. Stewart retired from the Navy as an independent duty chief hospital corpsman after 20 years.

He obtained his B.S. degree from the Norfolk College of William and Mary, and his master's degree from George Washington University. Mr. Stewart began his teaching career with the Virginia Beach School System as VOT Office training coordinator. He then became the business supervisor for Chesapeake City Schools and retired as assistant principal. Mr. Stewart was a member of the V.F.W., the N.E.A., the Fleet Reserve Association, and Bowling Association.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Sharon Hardison Helland of Phoenix, Ariz., Victoria Stewart Downey of Montgomery, Ala.; five grandchildren, Jennifer B. Hardison, Tori Leigh Hardison, Victoria Tyler Downey, Bruce Johnson Downey IV, John Stewart Downey; and a sister Dorothy Smiley of Detroit, Mich.

A memorial service will be conducted today at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, Virginia Beach, by Chaplin James Fedor. According to his wishes Mr. Stewart will be cremated and have a Navy burial at sea. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Renal Foundation or the American Heart Foundation.
