RITA D. VELLINES

Rita Dempsey Vellines died Sept. 25, 1996, in Hendersonville, N.C.

Rita was born March 18, 1911, in Philadelphia, Pa. She was the daughter of Margaret Anne Burton Dempsey and Michael Angelo Dempsey Jr., who moved to Norfolk in 1916. Rita grew up in the Campostella area of Norfolk and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Norfolk. She has been a resident of the Chesapeake Beach area of Virginia Beach since 1948.

Mrs. Vellines was active for many years in the Chesapeake Beach Womens Club. She was also an active member of the Sacred Heart PTA in Norfolk, and voluntered many hours to the Meals on Wheels program in Virginia Beach. She also served for many years on the Virginia Beach Library Board, and was most recently active in the Nifty Over Fifty's Club at Church of the Holy Family.

Rita was a sales representative for Avon products for approximately 30 years. She was also a contributing writer for the Virginia Beach Sun newspaper during the 1950s and 1960s.

Rita is survived by her husband, Richard Joseph Vellines of 2484 Bayview Ave., Virginia Beach; her children, Richard J. Vellines of Spartanburg, S.C., and daughter, Rose Marie Puncke of Hendersonville; four grandchildren, Steven Vellines of Easley, S.C., Donna Seay of Spartanburg, S.C., Barry D. Couch of Virginia Beach, Megan Puncke of Hendersonville; three great-grandchildren, Logan and Adam Couch of Virginia Beach, Regan Seay of Spartanburg; her sister, Marion Garrett of Virginia Beach; and her brother, Michael A. Dempsey of North Charleston, S.C.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of the Holy Family by Father Richard Mooney. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 8 p.m. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Laskin Road Chapel is handling arrangements.
