THURSDAY WASN'T A GOOD DAY TO BE A WAHOO

Wahoo fishing was great Thursday in the Gulf Stream off Hatteras. Charters landed six to 16 wahoo per boat, weighing between 25 and 60 pounds each. The best action was between the 39800 and the 40100 Loran lines in 25 to 50 fathoms of water. Ballyhoo and red Drone spoons were the big producers.

Blue water charters off Oregon Inlet caught fair numbers of yellowfin tuna, mostly near the 40480 Loran line. Most of the fish weighed about 50 pounds. A few dolphin also were taken and several billfish were released.

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was slow.

A few spot, sea mullet and several large pompano were landed on Kitty Hawk Pier.

Avalon Pier reported lots of different species of fish caught, but only a few of each variety. Spot, mullet, croaker, small bluefish and Spanish mackerel were caught in small quantities.

Fishermen on Nags Head Pier caught some small pompano, black drum and flounder during the morning, but they caught few in the afternoon.

Fishing was slow on Jennette's Pier throughout the day.

Outer Banks Pier reported little action during the morning, but fishing improved late in the afternoon with some Spanish mackerel and spot taken.

South of Oregon Inlet, anglers on Rodanthe Pier caught a few small bottom fish and bluefish.

Lots of small bluefish, a few spot, sea mullet and small croaker were taken on Avon Pier.

Pompano, small flounder, a few mullet and a few black drum were landed on Frisco Pier.

Surf fishermen caught some small bottom fish, a few pompano and small bluefish along the northern beaches Thursday.

Small bluefish, a few black drum, pompano, spot and croaker were beached around Oregon Inlet. Quite a few stripers were hooked and released by anglers fishing from the Oregon Inlet bridge.

Sea mullet, small spot, croaker, bluefish and a few puppy drum and a 24-pound jack were taken at Cape Point.

Small bluefish, a few flounder and gray trout were landed in the surf from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet. A 43-pound cobia was landed by a surf fisherman using bottom bait at False Point. Boaters in Hatteras Inlet caught some speckled trout.

A mixture of small bottom fish, puppy drum and pompano should be available for surf-casters all along the Dare Coast this weekend.

The water temperature was 72 degrees Thursday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, as well as at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
