At high school football games, sometimes the cheerleaders are overlooked. But not this time: Four junior varsity cheerleaders from Northeastern High School are the ones going to the all-star game, not the players.
Ninth-graders Courtney Fletcher, Mandy Meads and Julie Willingham and 10th-grader Wendy Wallace have been selected by the Universal Cheering Association to perform at the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii in February.
The only catch is that the quartet has to raise $8,000 by Nov. 11 to go.
The cheerleaders were selected at a camp they attended this past summer at Central Elementary School in Elizabeth City.
The girls will stay a week in Hawaii, visiting historical sites, including Pearl Harbor, and competing for scholarships.
The final reward will be cheering at the Pro Bowl on Feb. 2.
So far, fund-raisers have netted more than $1,000.
With the deadline only five weeks away, Fletcher said the girls have scheduled more activities to raise money.
``We will be at the Chowan County Fair with a bake sale and raffle tickets,'' Fletcher said one day before cheering at the Northeastern-Currituck junior varsity game. ``We will have another raffle for $100. We're also writing letters to businesses asking for donations and sponsorships.'' by CNB
