BALLEIN NAMED HOKIES' ASSISTANT AD FOR FOOTBALL

John Ballein, a former coach at Wilson and Western Branch high schools in the early 1980s, has been promoted to assistant athletic director for football operations at Virginia Tech.

Ballein has been with the Hokies program for eight years, beginning as a graduate assistant in 1987. He will be responsible for all operations dealing with the football program.

His previous title was assistant to head coach Frank Beamer and departmental recruiting coordinator, duties he will retain.

Ballein earned a master's degree in education from Old Dominion in 1985. While attending ODU, he taught and coached at Wilson and Western Branch.

Ballein, a native of Bentleyville, Pa., was a linebacker at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned a degree in health and physical education in 1983.

Tech athletic director Dave Braine also announced Thursday that Cheryl Gasper has been promoted to director of facilities and game management, a position previously held by Don Perry. ILLUSTRATION: John Ballein will be responsible for all operations
