IT'S ELWAY OVER MARINO BY AN ANKLE

Breakdown: If durability is the tiebreaker, John Elway moves ahead of Dan Marino on the list of big-shot quarterbacks.

Idle thought: The self-destruction of the Dallas Cowboys might be fun to watch now, but if their losing continues, it will be just one more reason not to care about pro football.

Cream corn: The Redskins' schedule is soft enough to be consumed with dentures out.

Still available: Former Redskin receiving great Art Monk, a few weeks shy of his 39th birthday, still works out in Northern Virginia hoping that a team will take a chance on him.

Future watch: If Virginia Tech wins at Syracuse Saturday, the Hokies should be undefeated when they visit Miami on Nov. 16.

Top to bottom: While Virginia Tech owns the longest football winning streak in Division I-A, the longest losing streak belongs to Oregon State, where the director of athletics is Dutch Baughman, whose claim to fame while at Tech was hiring Frank Beamer.

Hit and run: The Yankees couldn't be much grittier. Or less glamorous.

Getting stronger: Now that they're healthy again, David Cone and Jimmy Key give the Yankees a playoff edge over opponents - fresh arms. ``The time we missed should help,'' Key says, ``because we'll be right where we normally would be the first of June.''

Maybe the best: Florida's Kevin Brown, who leads the National League in ERA, won't win 20 games or the Cy Young Award because, in his 11 losses, the Marlins scored a total of 11 runs.

Numbers game: In 1988, Kirk Gibson won the National League Most Valuable Player award with the Dodgers after hitting .290 with 25 home runs and 76 RBIs. In this season of the lively ball and titanic blasts, those stats would have him hitting eighth.

Tubular: Georgetown's basketball team is scheduled to appear on national TV nine times this season, leading one to believe that network executives aren't aware Allen Iverson now gets his mail in Philadelphia.

Big nothing: Quarterback Jeff George's uniform number should be reduced from 1 to 0 to reflect his contribution inside the locker room.

Golf world: Now that Tiger Woods has withdrawn from this week's Buick Challenge, television will get a chance to reintroduce the world to the rest of the field.

Best foot forward: I'll believe Tiger Woods is the Michael Jordan of golf when I see kids standing on corners in two-tone golf shoes with tassels.

Reality check: As Virginia Beach golfer Carl Paulson struggles to gain a foothold on the pro tour, I wonder how many others in his college graduating class can say they've earned more than $98,000 for nine months work. by CNB
