A passenger holding a child jumped from a car fleeing police late Thursday at an intersection, police said.
The 5-year-old boy was slightly hurt. The man who jumped was not. The driver sped away and was later arrested.
A city police car, damaged during the pursuit, was the fourth police car reported damaged in chases in two days.
The driver of the fleeing car was identified as Kevin Lee Breeding, 28, of Fawn Court in Suffolk. The boy who was hurt is Breeding's son, also named Kevin. The adult passenger who jumped from the car with the boy was not identified.
The chase started about 8:30 p.m. Thursday when a police officer tried to stop a motorist driving without lights.
The chase reached speeds of about 60 mph and ranged several miles along Independence Boulevard, Baxter, Princess Anne and Witchduck roads before ending on Falcon Avenue, where the driver stopped the car and ran away.
Police found the driver after a citizen told them he was hiding under a nearby school bus.
Breeding was charged with reckless driving, driving without insurance, having a suspended license, not wearing a seat belt, hit and run, eluding police and child endangerment. He was being held without bail in the city jail.
